Shoppes of Stow Showcases Interactive Artwork to Boost Business

The Shoppes of Stow business owners hope to attract potential customers to Darrow Road Square with new interactive storefronts that give attendees a chance to win big prizes.

The concept is simple: take photos posing with at least one of the seven murals and upload them to social media using the commercial tags and hashtags noted at the bottom of the windows.

Anyone who tags @gavinscottsalon will receive a $ 10 gift card and enter a weekly draw to win a spa day for two. The photo that marks @Dancerspointeohio with the most likes will also win a $ 75 gift certificate to the dance wear store.

Gavin-Scott co-owner Kristie Shaffer explained that the show typically has a summer promotion titled “Where in the World is Gavin Scott.” Customers were taking photos on vacation all over the world, including Alaska and Greece, and tagging the living room to win prizes.

“Due to the pandemic, obviously we’re not doing it, so we were like, ‘What can we do that is different? “” Shaffer said.

Seeing how popular interactive art had become, Shaffer contacted Stow artist Leila Griffiths, a client whose work she had seen on several occasions. Griffiths exhibited his work at the show at Stow’s inaugural art exhibition across town, Level Ground: A Stow Celebration of Women in the Arts, and in the windows of the now closed Corner Cup Coffee.

She also now has her work displayed on one of the city’s electric traffic boxes on Darrow and Lillian Roads as part of the city’s beautification program.

“When I saw her working [at Corner Cup], I thought it would be great to use it to drive some fun stuff in the square, ”Shaffer said.

Six other companies – Revolution Fitness, a tailor, Wizard of Paws, Dancer’s Pointe, Blue Wolf Martial Arts and Luca’s New York Style Pizza, which will soon open – were on board, and two weeks ago Griffiths began painting their windows with interactive images that complemented the business.

At Revolution Fitness, Griffiths painted strong arms different skin tones so people could flex with giant biceps. Wizards of Paws has a dog on a floating leash so people can pretend to be pulling the dog. Dancer’s Pointe has an umbrella that blocks the rain in reference to “Singin ‘in the Rain”. Blue Wolf Martial Arts has a broken wooden plank that people can pretend to smash surrounded by BAMs and comic book-style prisoners of war. And Luca offers soaring pizzas that people can pretend to spin.

There is also a bundle of balloons that can take you to the tailor and a bubble wand with tons of bubbles like Gavin Scott.

“I just want to do cute things and everyone enjoys it, so I hope this is a fun way for people to get involved in art,” Griffiths said.

Shaffer hopes the art promotes participating businesses and leads customers to new additions instead, including Luca’s, a locksmith, and the Top Driver driving school.

She also hopes it will help plaza businesses that have struggled during the pandemic.

While Gavin Scott took a hit during the 10 weeks the business was forced to shut down, the salon rebounded with “Glamazon,” a service that delivers products and hair dyes and haircuts to your door.

“The city has been very good to us so it’s a way of giving back to the people who may have taken a bigger hit than us,” Shaffer said.
