“Let the wedding plans begin! Nigerians excited as SFOC orders release of romantic soldier
Nigerians on social media are delighted that the Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General. Faruk Yahaya, ordered the immediate release of a detained female soldier, Private Sofiyat Akinlabi.
COAS ordered the soldier to be pardoned and released on Saturday after 11 days in detention.
She was detained on December 14, 2021, after publicly accepting the marriage proposal of a young officer identified simply as Remi at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Yikpata, Kwara state.
Many Nigerians and civil society organizations had since called for his release and littered social media with photos of male soldiers proposing to their loves in uniform.
In addition, two petitions on the Change.org platform calling for his release drew more than 10,000 signatures.
The corper’s family had also asked the military authorities to pardon Akinlabi, claiming the duo met three years ago in Abeokuta where they started their love life.
In what appeared to be a Christmas present to family and many Nigerians, SFOC ordered the release of the romantic soldier the Saturday.
Speaking to social media, many enthusiastic users praised SFOC and said wedding plans should begin immediately.
One Facebook user, Aliyat Aliyat, was enthusiastic: “Romantic soldier, let’s start the wedding plans”.
“Now we can start the wedding plans,” Itoro Orok told Aliyat.
Another user, Onomo Oghenekevwe, said: “Finally some good news! I want to buy asoebi and eat rice. The military must sponsor the marriage.
“I will provide men in suits,” Obinna Okoro wrote.
“Christmas present to his family! Oyedele Adediji said.
