On July 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke out against attempts “to get votes by handing out ‘revadis'”. Arvind Kejriwal was quick to claim that the targeting of political gifts was directed against his party Aam Adami. But the Prime Minister’s political objective was probably much larger. The BJP’s concerted attempt to impose restrictions on ‘debauched’ welfarist measures and the pre-election promise of freebies could help it neutralize an effective instrument regional parties have used against the BJP’s brand of nationalism and majoritarianism. .
